Short answer: there is no single best length. A clip should be as long as the moment needs and no longer. Platform maximums are generous: YouTube Shorts go up to three minutes, Instagram announced three-minute Reels in 2025, and TikTok has tested uploads of up to 60 minutes. Start tight, cut to the payoff, and test lengths on your own pages.
Platform limits, with sources
| Platform | Limit | Source (as of 17 Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes, square or vertical | YouTube Help |
| Instagram Reels | Three-minute Reels announced 19 Jan 2025, up from 90 seconds | MediaNama |
| TikTok (organic) | Longer uploads rolled out over time; TikTok was testing 60-minute uploads with a limited group in May 2024 | TechCrunch |
| TikTok (non-Spark in-feed ads) | Up to 10 minutes | TikTok Ads help |
Limits change and can vary by account. Check the app before you plan around a maximum.
Longer isn't a strategy
No platform publishes an ideal length, and anyone quoting one as fact is guessing. What holds for clips in practice:
- Every second must earn its place. Setup that a new viewer doesn't need gets cut.
- The hook comes first. If the moment starts at 0:40 in your rough cut, your clip starts at 0:40.
- End on the payoff. Trailing reactions and "anyway" moments lose viewers.
- Stories can run longer than one-liners, if they stay tight.
Length by clip type
These ranges are working assumptions to start testing from, not platform guidance.
| Clip type | Starting range to test | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-liner / hot take | 10–30 s | The point is short |
| Tip or how-to | 30–60 s | Needs steps |
| Story with a turn | 45–90 s | Needs setup and payoff |
| Debate or back-and-forth | 60–120 s | Needs both sides |
| Gameplay highlight | 10–40 s | Action is brief |
For a Shorts channel, remember that Content ID affects Shorts over one minute: from 24 September 2026 YouTube says new Shorts between one and three minutes with an active claim are no longer automatically blocked, but the claim still applies. See Shorts clip channels.
Testing length on your own pages
- Pick one clip type and one page.
- Make two cuts of similar moments at different lengths.
- Post them on different days at the same time.
- Compare day-7 views and, where the app shows it, watch time.
- Repeat before drawing conclusions.
Track it in your sheet; see tracking views across accounts. Don't post two versions of the same clip on one page to test; that is a duplicate.
Podcast and stream specifics are in podcast clips and stream clips.
Posting different lengths with Farmero
Farmero posts the file you give it at the length you cut; it doesn't trim or re-edit. A clip that fits all three platforms can be fanned out to TikTok, Reels and Shorts accounts in one go, each with its own caption. See posting.
FAQ
What is the best length for a TikTok clip?
The shortest length that delivers the full moment. Test ranges on your own page rather than relying on a universal number.
Can a YouTube Short be longer than 60 seconds?
Yes. YouTube Help says Shorts can be up to three minutes with a square or vertical aspect ratio.
How long can Instagram Reels be?
Instagram announced three-minute Reels in January 2025.
Should I always use the maximum length?
No. The maximum is a limit, not a target. Cut to the payoff.
