Phone farm overheating — causes and how to cool a rack

Why iPhones in a phone farm overheat, what Apple says happens when they do, and the cheap fixes that keep a rack inside Apple's temperature range.

Short answer: farm iPhones get hot because they charge, run apps and keep the screen on at once, often packed together. Apple designs iPhones for ambient temperatures of 0–35 °C (32–95 °F). Keep the room well inside that, stand phones upright with gaps, take cases off, turn brightness down, move air with a fan, and on iPhone 15 or newer set an 80% charge limit.

What Apple says about heat

Apple's support page states that iPhones "are designed for use where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F)." When a phone runs hot, it protects itself: charging slows or stops, the screen dims or goes black, and performance drops. In severe cases it shows a "needs to cool down" warning (Apple Support, checked 17 September 2026).

On a farm, every one of those is a problem. A phone that stops charging will eventually run flat and drop off. A dim or black screen can stop automation that reads the screen. A throttled phone runs slow and times out.

A cooling checklist

  1. Measure the room. A cheap thermometer on the rack tells you more than guessing. Log it for a week, including the warmest afternoon.
  2. Stand phones upright in a slotted stand with space on both sides. See rack layout.
  3. Cases off.
  4. Brightness to minimum. Automation does not need a bright screen.
  5. Charge limit to 80% on iPhone 15 and later; keep Optimized Battery Charging on for older models — details in battery care.
  6. A fan moving air across the phones, not just around the room. A quiet desk fan at low speed is often enough for a small rack.
  7. Hubs and power bricks lower or to the side, not directly under phones.
  8. No direct sun, no closed cabinets without active ventilation.
  9. Stagger heavy work. If every phone starts a warm-up at the same minute, they all heat up together.

Don't use phone "cooler" clips that stick to the back of each phone. They add parts to every device and are one more thing to fail on a rack.

Signs a phone is too hot

  • Battery stuck at the same level while plugged in.
  • Screen dimmer than the others with the same settings.
  • Runs on that phone timing out more than on the others.
  • A temperature warning on screen.
  • Back or screen starting to lift — take that phone out of service at once; that is a swelling battery.
