Cross-posting TikTok, Reels and Shorts: best practices

How to post one video to TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts without watermarks or copy-paste captions, with specs, timing and a per-platform checklist.

Farmero team · checked

Short answer: export one clean vertical master without any app's watermark, then adapt the caption, on-screen text and link for each platform. Instagram says it avoids recommending Reels that carry other apps' logos, and YouTube Shorts descriptions have no clickable links. Keep the length within each platform's limit and stagger posts so you can reply to comments on each.

Start from a clean master

Download-and-repost is the most common mistake. A video saved from TikTok carries TikTok's watermark, and Instagram's head said in October 2024 that Instagram tries "not [to] recommend Reels with logos from other apps", while your own logo is fine (Social Media Today, checked 17 September 2026). Export from your editor, at 9:16, and keep that file as the master.

Platform specs to respect

TikTok Instagram Reels YouTube Shorts
Aspect 9:16 recommended (ad specs) 9:16 Square or vertical
Length Check the app Up to 3 minutes Up to 3 minutes
Clickable link Profile website, when eligible Up to 5 profile links Channel links; related video

Adapt, don't copy

Element What to change per platform
First caption line Match how people search on that platform
Hashtags Few and relevant; don't paste the same block everywhere
Call to action "Link in profile" on Instagram; "full video linked" on Shorts
On-screen text Keep clear of each app's buttons and caption area
Cover or thumbnail Choose per platform where the app allows
Link Tagged per account; see UTM links

Originality

Cross-post your own work. Instagram now limits recommendations to non-followers for accounts built mostly on reposted content, and says superficial edits do not count as transformation (PetaPixel, April 2026). Posting your own video on your own accounts on three platforms is different from reposting someone else's.

Timing

Stagger the three posts by a few hours or a day, so someone can reply to early comments on each. Posting the same clip twice to the same account is best avoided; use a different cut instead. For multi-account TikTok use, see same video on multiple TikTok accounts.

Cross-posting from iPhones with Farmero

Farmero's fan-out takes one clip and makes a separate, editable card for each chosen account on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, so captions and times can differ. It warns (without blocking) if the same clip is headed to the same platform twice. It does not remove watermarks or alter videos, so start from the clean master. See posting and the repurposing pipeline.

FAQ

Is it fine to post the same video on TikTok, Reels and Shorts?

Yes, if it is your own clean export and you adapt captions per platform.

Why remove the TikTok watermark before posting to Reels?

Don't remove it from a download; export a clean file from your editor instead. Instagram says it avoids recommending Reels with other apps' logos.

Should captions be identical?

No. Adapt the first line and call to action to each platform.

How far apart should cross-posts go out?

Far enough that someone can reply to comments on each. A few hours is a reasonable assumption.
