Instagram trial reels — what they are and how to use them

What Instagram trial reels are, how they reach non-followers first, how to turn the Trial toggle on, when results arrive, and how to use them to test ideas.

Short answer: Instagram trial reels are reels shown to non-followers first, so you can test an idea without it appearing to your followers. You switch on the Trial toggle before sharing. About 24 hours later you can see views, likes, comments and shares, and you can let Instagram automatically share it with followers if it performs well within the first 72 hours. The toggle only appears for eligible accounts.

How trial reels work

From Instagram's announcement (Instagram for Creators, December 2024, as of September 2026):

  • Trial reels are shared with people who do not follow you.
  • They do not appear in followers' feeds or the Reels tab at first, though some followers may still see one in other places, for example if it is sent to them or on pages for the same audio, filter or location.
  • Engagement metrics are available about 24 hours after sharing.
  • You can opt in to automatic sharing with followers if Instagram judges the reel is performing well based on views in the first 72 hours.

Instagram's help center describes the feature as letting creators "share reels with and get feedback from people who don't follow them" (About Trial Reels, as of September 2026).

Who can use them

Instagram's announcement points to its help center for eligibility and does not list criteria itself. Third-party coverage says trial reels need a public professional account and cites a 1,000-follower threshold (Metricool, as of September 2026). Treat that as reported, not official: the practical test is whether the Trial toggle appears on your share screen.

How to post one

  1. Create a reel as usual.
  2. On the final share screen, turn on the Trial toggle.
  3. Optionally choose automatic sharing to followers if it performs well.
  4. Share.
  5. After about a day, check its metrics.
  6. Share it to followers manually if it did well, or change it and try again.

Using trial reels to test ideas

Test one variable at a time, so the result means something.

Test Keep the same Change Judge on
Hook Topic, length, audio First 2 seconds Views, shares
Length Topic, hook 15 s vs 45 s version Views, likes
Format Topic Talking head vs text-on-screen Shares, comments
Topic Style, length Subject Views, follows after sharing

Trial reels still count as your content: they follow the same Community Guidelines and the same originality expectations. Instagram has said it recommends the original when it finds identical content (TechCrunch, April 2024), so testing reposted clips will not tell you much. Only use material you own or have permission to use.

Specs are the same as a normal reel; see Instagram Reels specs. If your trials never reach anyone, run the Instagram shadowban check.

Where Farmero fits

Farmero posts regular Reels to your own Instagram accounts through the app on your iPhones. It does not create trials or switch the Trial toggle, so run your tests by hand in the Instagram app and use Farmero for the scheduled posts that follow. See Posting and how many Reels to post per day.

FAQ

Do trial reels show on my profile?

Instagram says they are not shown to followers in feed or the Reels tab at first. Some followers may still come across one elsewhere.

How long until I see trial reel results?

About 24 hours after sharing, according to Instagram's announcement.

Can a trial reel be shared with followers later?

Yes. Share it manually, or opt in to automatic sharing if it performs well within 72 hours.

Why don't I see the Trial toggle?

Your account may not be eligible. Third-party coverage says a public professional account is needed; Instagram's help center has the current criteria.
