Short answer: third-party guides put TikTok's in-app caption limit at 4,000 characters, while TikTok's own posting API caps captions at 2,200 UTF-16 characters. Hashtags are part of the caption and count toward the limit. TikTok publishes no hashtag maximum that we could find; a few relevant hashtags plus a clear first line work better than a wall of tags.
The limits
TikTok's help center pages loaded empty for us, so here is what we could verify and where it comes from.
| Item | Limit | Source (as of September 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Caption, in the app | 4,000 characters | TypeCount (third-party) |
| Caption, via TikTok's posting API | 2,200 UTF-16 characters | TikTok for Developers |
| Hashtags | Count toward the caption; no published maximum found | — |
| Visible before "more" | Roughly the first line (about 80–100 characters per TypeCount) | TypeCount |
Caption limits have changed before: TikTok raised them from 300 to 2,200 characters when photo mode launched (Search Engine Journal, Oct 2022). Expect them to change again.
If you post through a scheduling tool that uses the API, the 2,200 cap is the one that applies. Emoji can count as more than one UTF-16 character.
How to write the caption
- First line does the work. It is often all anyone reads. Say what the video is about in plain words.
- Use the words people would search. "Easy 10 minute pasta" describes the video; "you need this" does not.
- Add context the video does not. Steps, a source, a question.
- Put hashtags at the end. Three to five relevant tags is a sensible starting assumption.
- Skip engagement bait. "Like for like" style asks can make a video ineligible for the For You feed under TikTok's FYF standards (as of September 2026).
Picking hashtags
- Relevant beats popular. A giant tag with nothing to do with the video brings the wrong viewers.
- Mix one broad and a couple of specific tags for your niche.
- Do not copy the same block onto every post. Tailor it.
- No misleading tags. YouTube, for one, says misleading or unrelated hashtags may get a video removed (YouTube Help, as of September 2026); treat every platform the same way.
Captions across platforms
If you post the same video you own on several apps, adjust the caption per platform:
| Platform | Caption limit | Hashtag rule |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 4,000 in app (third-party), 2,200 via API | No published maximum found |
| Instagram Reels | 2,200 (Meta for Developers) | Moving to 5 (Social Media Today) |
| YouTube Shorts | Title 100, description 5,000 (YouTube Help) | More than 60 and all are ignored (YouTube Help) |
All as of September 2026. See TikTok vs Reels vs Shorts.
Captions with Farmero
Farmero types the caption into the TikTok app on your iPhone, including separate paragraphs, applies your per-post settings and reads them back, and refuses a setting it cannot apply rather than posting it wrong. When you fan one clip out to several accounts, each account gets its own editable card, so you can write a different caption per account. See Posting and the same video on multiple TikTok accounts. Automating these apps may breach their terms, and nobody can promise an account will never be restricted.
