Phone farm SIM cards or Wi-Fi? The honest trade-offs

SIM cards or Wi-Fi for a phone farm: what each changes about IP addresses, cost, admin and reliability, and which one suits a small iPhone rack.

Short answer: most iPhone farms run on Wi-Fi. It is cheap, fast and simple, and a phone needs no SIM to post. SIM cards give each phone its own carrier connection, which is the main reason people use them, but they add a monthly plan per phone, data caps, signal problems indoors and SIM admin. A common middle ground is Wi-Fi plus one proxy per phone.

What actually differs

The question is really about connections. On Wi-Fi, every phone behind your router shares one public IP. With a SIM and Wi-Fi off, each phone uses its carrier's network and an address from the carrier's pool.

Neither choice changes how the automation behaves, and behavior matters more than the address. Automating these apps may breach their terms, and nobody can promise an account will never be restricted.

Measure real usage first: run one phone on Wi-Fi for a week and read your router's per-device usage stats before you buy data plans. Video feeds use far more data than posting.

Practical problems with SIMs on a rack

  • Signal. A metal shelf in a back room is a poor place for reception. Weak signal means slow uploads and failed posts.
  • Heat. A phone on a weak signal works harder, and farm phones already run warm — see cooling.
  • Carrier locks. A used phone locked to one carrier won't take another carrier's SIM. See the used iPhone checklist.
  • Account recovery. A SIM gives a phone number, which is handy for recovery codes, but only if you keep the plan active. Losing the number can lock you out — see account security.
  • Wi-Fi must be off for traffic to go over cellular, so you lose the cheap connection.

When each makes sense

Wi-Fi alone — a handful of accounts, one location, the lowest cost and effort.

Wi-Fi plus a proxy per phone — many accounts on one connection, and you want each phone to have its own exit address without a plan per phone. See proxies per phone.

Do phone farm iPhones need SIM cards?

Do SIM cards make accounts safer than Wi-Fi?

They give each phone a different address, which is one signal. Nobody can promise any setup keeps accounts from being restricted.

How much data does a farm phone use on cellular?

It depends on how much video it watches. Measure one phone on Wi-Fi for a week before buying plans.

Can I mix SIM and Wi-Fi phones on one rack?

Yes. Just record which is which in your inventory sheet so troubleshooting starts in the right place.
