UGC creator phone setup: filming phone, light and a posting phone

A practical UGC creator phone setup: camera settings, lighting, audio, mounts, and why many creators keep a second phone just for posting.

Farmero team · checked

Short answer: a UGC setup needs one good phone for filming, a soft light source, a clip-on microphone and a stable mount. Film vertical at 1080p or higher, at a steady frame rate, with the lens clean. Many creators add a second phone for posting and account work so the filming phone stays free and client accounts stay separate.

The kit

Item Why Notes
Filming phone Main camera A recent iPhone's rear camera is the usual pick
Soft light Even skin tones, clean product shots A window or an LED panel with a diffuser
Clip-on mic Clear voice Wireless or wired; test in the room you film in
Tripod and overhead arm Steady shots, top-down demos Overhead matters for faceless formats
Clean backdrop Brands reuse footage Neutral wall, tidy shelf
Posting phone Accounts, scheduling, client logins Can be an older iPhone
Storage Raw files add up External drive or cloud

Camera settings

  • Orientation: vertical, 9:16.
  • Resolution: 1080p at minimum; 4K gives you room to crop.
  • Frame rate: pick one (30 fps is common) and keep it for the whole shoot. YouTube's encoding guidance (as of 17 September 2026) says content should be uploaded "in the same frame rate it was recorded."
  • Rear camera when you can; it is usually better than the front one.
  • Lock exposure and focus on the subject so it doesn't pulse mid-shot.
  • Clean the lens before every session.

Export settings are in vertical video export settings.

Light and sound

  • Face the window, or put the light at about 45 degrees to one side and slightly above.
  • Avoid mixed color temperatures, like daylight plus a warm bulb.
  • Soft furnishings cut echo. A closet full of clothes is a classic voiceover booth.
  • Record ten seconds of room tone; it helps when editing.

Why a second phone for posting

  • The filming phone stays free for shoots while posts go out.
  • Client accounts stay separate from your personal apps.
  • Fewer mistakes. A phone with a fixed set of work accounts makes it harder to post to the wrong one.
  • Warm-up and testing can happen without touching your personal feed.

If you manage brand logins, see posting on a brand account. If you are choosing a spare iPhone, see which iPhone to buy.

A ten-minute pre-shoot check

  1. Phone charged, storage free, Do Not Disturb on.
  2. Lens wiped.
  3. Light on and positioned; no mixed color temperatures.
  4. Mic paired and tested with a short recording.
  5. Frame checked in 9:16 with the product in the center.
  6. Exposure and focus locked.
  7. Props and product clean, labels facing the camera.

A checklist taped near the setup saves reshoots more than any gear upgrade.

Running the posting phone with Farmero

Farmero is a Mac app that drives your own iPhones (iOS 17 or later) over USB, posting to your TikTok, Instagram and YouTube accounts through the real apps. A second iPhone plugged into your Mac becomes the posting phone: up to eight accounts, each post confirmed on the profile before it is marked posted, and clips delivered over the cable. It needs Xcode once to install a small runner on the phone. See connecting iPhones and the install guide.

FAQ

What phone is best for UGC filming?

A recent phone with a good rear camera and stabilization. The light and sound usually matter more than the model.

Do I need a ring light?

No. A window or any soft, diffused light works. Ring lights are one option.

Should I film in 4K?

If storage allows. 4K gives you room to crop and reframe; export at the resolution the platform expects.

Why use a separate phone for posting?

It keeps the filming phone free, separates work accounts from personal ones, and reduces wrong-account posts.
