How to grow a new YouTube Shorts channel in the first 30 days

A realistic 30-day plan for a new YouTube Shorts channel, with current Shorts specs, how views are counted, and the policies that trip up new channels.

Farmero team · checked

Short answer: to grow a new YouTube Shorts channel, pick one narrow topic, post original vertical videos of up to three minutes on a steady schedule you can keep, and judge the first 30 days by what you learn, not by views. Set up the channel fully first, keep titles and hashtags honest, and avoid reposting other people's clips: YouTube's reused and inauthentic content policies apply to Shorts too.

Before day one

  • Create the channel properly. If you plan more than one channel, use a Brand Account so you can add managers later. See creating a YouTube Brand Account.
  • Know the specs. Shorts can be up to three minutes with a square or vertical aspect ratio (YouTube Help, as of September 2026). Full list: Shorts requirements.
  • Know the rules. YouTube's spam policy prohibits using automation or AI "to churn out high volumes of similar content with minimal changes" and reposting scraped content. Its reused and inauthentic content policy (renamed from "repetitious" on July 15, 2025) affects monetization across a channel. Both as of September 2026.

A 30-day plan

The cadence below is an assumption to adjust, not a published YouTube number.

Days Focus Posting (assumption) What to check
1–3 Channel name, handle, picture, description; watch Shorts in your niche 0–1 Your Shorts feed reflects the niche
4–10 Test 3–4 different hooks and formats 1 a day Which formats keep people watching
11–20 Double down on the best 1–2 formats 1–2 a day Engaged views vs views
21–30 Series and repeatable formats; reply to comments 1–2 a day Subscribers per Short, returning viewers

How YouTube counts Shorts views

Since March 31, 2025, a Shorts view counts each time a Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch time; a separate engaged views metric tracks people who keep watching (YouTube Help, as of September 2026). Engaged views are the better signal for a new channel. YouTube says its recommendations use viewing behavior, likes, dislikes, subscriptions and satisfaction surveys (How YouTube Works, as of September 2026), so a video people finish and rewatch matters more than one with a clever title.

For reference, YouTube Partner Program eligibility through Shorts is 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days (same help page). That is a long-term goal, not a 30-day one, and nothing here promises you will reach it.

What slows new channels down

  • Reuploaded TikToks with watermarks. Upload the clean original file.
  • Near-identical uploads. Small edits to the same clip are what the spam policy describes.
  • Misleading or excess hashtags. YouTube ignores all hashtags on a video with more than 60 (YouTube Help, as of September 2026).
  • Changing topic every week. It makes it hard for anyone to know what the channel is for.

Only use footage and music you own or have permission to use.

Posting Shorts from real iPhones

Farmero posts Shorts to your own channels through the YouTube app on your iPhones, reads the channel on screen before posting to prove it is the right one, and checks the channel for the new Short before marking it posted. Optional warm-up sessions watch Shorts in your niche for a number of days you set before the channel starts publishing. See Warm-ups and several Shorts channels on one iPhone. Automating these apps may breach their terms, and nobody can promise an account will never be restricted.

How many Shorts should a new channel post?

YouTube does not publish a number. One a day is a common starting assumption; see how many Shorts per day.

Can I post my TikToks as Shorts?

If they are your own original videos, yes. Upload the clean file without the TikTok watermark.

How long can a Short be?

Up to three minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio, as of September 2026.
